Late onset

Call me slow on the uptake but I hadn't actually checked out the collection that included the boots we've all been dying over for the past couple months. Aside from discovering that they come in MINT and ORANGE SHERBET (just the knowledge that they're out there somewhere makes me happy), I've decided that I'm in desperate need of ink splattery tie dyed minidresses, however unsold I remain on the monochromatic pastel look.

Oh yeah, and they come in a transparent/black combination too. Topshop, how were these not mass produced? Mmm shiny stiff ruffles.

The latest more affordable wares - I would have bought the cardigan but I swear to God Topshop has already sucked away wayyy too much of my money this month. I'm awaiting not one but two orders..bad bad. Included are Kate Moss wet-look skinnies, the studded Gucci k/o boots, and a D.I.P. dress. Though I doubt I would have been able to resist if she had recreated any of the three dresses on the left...

I don't think better inspiration pictures exist for a foggy day at the beach. Halloween usually marks the beginning of colder weather in California so layering might enter the equation soon.

Hope everyone enjoys the holiday! My Childlike Empress headpiece is almost complete.

vogue girl korea revisited

Here's the article I wrote for the November issue of Vogue Girl Korea, who I seriously must thank for all the support. Looking at these photos again is really making me miss New York.

Thanks Josh for the scans ;)

ETA the article..I tried my best to omit all of my California-isms that I had a feeling wouldn't translate well into Korean:

Though I spend most of my days hanging out at the beach and finding new ways to get into trouble with my friends, I have always had a love of fashion that no one I knew could even come close to understanding. I started Fashiontoast less than a year ago on a whim, as a way to release my ideas and share random photographs of my life, so when I got an email from Erin's assistant saying that Erin was a fan of my style and they loved what I was doing, it was as surprising as it was exciting that something so simple as a blog could reach someone who I can most simply describe as one of my biggest inspirations.

I had read that she was collaborating with surf/skate company RVCA to create a line that would fuse the beachy grunge glamour of Southern California with the downtown cool of New York city, which sounded like the idealized version of how I would describe my style - you can only imagine how excited I was when they requested my address so that they could send me samples from it..more than half a year before it was going to be in stores! When I received the package, I breathlessly removed item after item, and it became clear that Erin had put a very personal touch on every last piece. What struck the most was the cuts and silhouettes, from a loosely draping tank top with a high rise in the back and a body hugging miniskirt with a line of studs down the center to a fitted motorcycle vest and perfect-for-layering jeweled bustier. I was in love with every last design - they're the kind of pieces that you just reach for over and over again because you don't want to wear anything else.

When Erin invited me to the preview for the line in New York during fashion week, I knew I needed to make it out there. What better reason could there be to make an unplanned trip to my favorite city? My boyfriend and I booked tickets to fly out for a week, and on our first day, barely even settled into our hotel, we took a cab in the oppressively humid heat to Erin's apartment. We rang the doorbell and were beckoned into a scene that was at once calm but full of creative energy. Erin came over and introduced herself and could not possibly have been more down to earth, funny, and, obviously, insanely beautiful. She made sure to make us feel at home, and showed me the rest of the collection that was to debut in mere hours, alongside her gorgeous jewelry line, Lowluv. Between the mayhem of styling the models, hair and makeup, and photographs and videos being taken, there was definitely a lot going on. Soon enough, everyone was all set and as my boyfriend and one of Erin's friends we had been talking to told me we were going to walk over to the party, Erin's mother interjected and told me there was no way I was going to walk that many blocks in the heels I was in (just the usual 4.5" footwear). She then kindly offered to share her cab with me, which is how I ended up pulling up to the party with Erin's mother herself.

The preview party was amazing - the models looked so relaxed, and the overall downtown vibe of the collection translated perfectly. The music, the people, and the fashion came together to create such a cool atmosphere, and I had the chance to meet people from Mickey Avalon to Scott Schuman, along with so many people from RVCA that I had previously only had email relationships with and I can now count among my good friends. My memory of the night gets a little hazy from then on - all I know is we ended up at a cool little bar down a dark alley and a lot of stairs.

We had the entire next day to recover and explore around the city a bit, but all I could think about was how excited I was to go to the Alexander Wang show the next day. We all know that Erin and Alexander are extremely good friends, and that her styling work for his fall collection captured the kind of grungy effortless cool that we all want our wardrobes to mirror..and Erin had managed to get me a second row ticket! Saturday proved to be a rainy mess, but we all headed down to Chelsea with our umbrellas. I was lucky enough to run into the charming Scott again, who took my photo for style.com before I headed into the crowd. After making my way through and posing for what seemed like a million photographers, I found my seat behind Erin and the show started. Right off the bat, the energy of the girls in their athletic and grungy looks filled the room, each one stomping down the runway in Alex's fierce black platform heels embellished with chains and fringe that I'm going to be scrambling to buy as soon as they're available in the spring. Key looks were a black mesh dress with squiggly detailing, a subtly draped white minidress, destroyed knitwear, and a gray sweatshirt top paired with the skinniest of leather trousers. What I love most about the collection as a whole is how sexy it is while keeping the silhouettes simple and comfortable for wearing in real life.

The afterparty was just as insane and fun as you would imagine it to be, with a performance by surprise special guest Foxy Brown, who herself was in a hot pink custom-made Alexander Wang design. My boyfriend and I mingled and danced all night in one of the most well dressed crowds I've ever seen.I definitely count myself very lucky to have been able to have these experiences - much love to the one and only Erin.

Forever 21 dress, DIY studded boots, H&M jacket, Balenciaga bag.

I'm continuing to stud most things in sight..I was nervous to attack these boots since they're pretty much the only flat anything that I like/wear right now but I'm stoked on the way they came out. I sure don't want these anymore.

Secondhand top, Levi's shorts, Lyte Accessories headband, Elizabeth & James ring, Bakers boots.

I actually played tennis here a few days ago for the first time in an overly long while and am, pitifully, still sore from it. As in hurts every time I laugh sore. I get pretty ferocious out there. Tennis is one of the few sports I actually find satisfying..I went surfing a few times when I lived in Hawaii and it seemed like a good time but I swear to God every time I was almost awesome all these idiotic drifting tourists would get in the way.

Has anyone else ordered the Olsens' Influence yet? My copy came today and I swear to God it's so good that if I was 12 I would want to make wallpaper out of it. Check out your future obsession here. It's worth buying just for the Karl interview. There are few things I love more than the things that come out of the Kaiser's mouth.

Since I'm too lazy to shop in real life anymore, I think I'm going to order these disgusting pseudo-sweat pants and see if I can take the gym out of them. This is probably Alexander Wang's fault.

Why doesn't blogger offer bullet point format? I would totally use it.

Lyte Accessories headband, vintage vest and blazer dress, Bakers boots.

Molly Rhymer of Lyte Accessories must have picked up on my headband fetish, luckily for me. She sent me a couple gorgeous pieces, both of which I've been wearing nonstop along with my Bakers boots that arrived this week. I honestly feel like a void in my life was filled, which is pretty sick. I walked two miles in them last night, which I suppose was brave given how new they are, but they're as comfortable as four and a half inchers are going to get.

Sun on my back

Erin x RVCA leather top, Levi's, Korcula necklace, vintage chain necklace worn as a bracelet.

It's about a thousand degrees again, the air is seriously suffocating me but at least it gives me a chance to wear this top before it actually transitions into fall. If it ever actually transitions into fall.

I wrote an article for Vogue Girl Korea on RVCA and my experiences in New York that a reader emailed me they had seen so hopefully I'll get a copy to share with you guys - my first official published work! Aside from a random photograph I took that Jane published when I was in high school. I used to be really into photography but I guess Colin's picked up the slack for me there. I thought I was so cool with my dad's 35mm Nikon from the '70s. Maybe I'll post some later if I can remember the password to my ancient Photobucket account. Subject matter largely consisted of the ground, people's backs in Tokyo, and recycling bins. I'm pretty sure I thought I was really intense.

Q is for Quail

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Quail jacket, Kain tank, Norwegian Wood harness, Levi's shorts, Topshop boots.

Michelle Williams of Quail was sweet enough to send me some pieces from her vintage-inspired line, which manages to be romantic without crossing over to saccharine. As soon as I touched this jacket I knew it was very me, the best thing about it being the gigantic knit hood that I of course failed to photograph in action. Next time.

A few people have asked about the comfort factor with the Emma Cook boots - all I have to say is chunky semi-shock absorbent rubbery sole is heaven even on 5 inches. Shoe designers take note. Kirsty made the interesting observation that they look sorta like flat boots from the front, which is weirdly true, though perhaps more so on her black version.

Stoked on the vlog reaching 20,000 views, you guys are amazing. We'll try to get another one going if we can convince Colin's dad that he needs to edit it.

The shag

Vintage jacket, American Apparel dress, Bebe heels.

Today was weirdly cold and I took full advantage by breaking out the Mongolian faux fur. I love outerwear that makes me feel like a crazy person. I've been gathering a few things that fall neatly into this category, including a fringed plaid cape - three near don'ts that should probably never meet. I'm just as scared of it as I am gleeful over it.

Buttoned all the way down

Secondhand shirt, Erin Wasson x RVCA skirt, vintage Chanel bag, vintage boots.

I've been gravitating towards this army green lately. What better form for it to take than a huge men's shirt? Especially one that's still too small for Colin to steal.

Head games

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

I spent all day yesterday hanging out with Colin's family, and upon declaring that I wanted to be the Childlike Empress for Halloween I was met with a sea of blank faces. Not a single person could remember the ethereal Fantastican icon? Whatever. My FCUK dress could work, leaving me with the problem of the crazy headpiece. Too bad House of Harlow isn't out yet, Nicole's would be perfect. I think I'll try to get my hands on it when it comes out anyway, it would be just as gorgeous worn casually.

(if you're as confused as they were you can investigate here)

Tall tale

Urbn shirt, customized American Apparel leggings, Colin Stuart boots, E&J ring.

I was taken aback by these boots at first because they are TALL. Almost tall enough to qualify as trousers. After acclimating myself to the cased in feel, I decided this was a good thing. Halfway statements are boring anyway. Thumbs up for comfort, the only problem being how slouchy they are. I'm going to try to get a cobbler to take them in a bit so they look more like this. Then my superhero boots and I will conquer the world.

Secondhand blazer, Urbn shirt, Topshop shorts, Old Navy tights, Zara boots, , E&J ring, Korcula and vintage necklaces, RVCA bag

The part of my Topshop order that actually worked out...is anyone else really loving these pseudo-Guccis?

I was going to do an old fashioned "what's in the bag" post but I swear it's pretty dull in there - holey white scarf, gray beanie, feathered headband, wallet, Aquaphor, L'oreal Colour Juice, keys, phone. It's always good to be able to accessorize in two seconds flat. So now I just have a photo of me..near my bag.

And yes I have roots worse than Tori Spelling, but I'm totally putting off going to the crazy salon cause honestly there's nothing worse than sitting in a chair immobilized for four hours freezing to death. Somehow no matter how much I layer it's never enough for that place.

Friday eye candy

Dying over this editorial in November's Vogue Paris, do I even need to say it's styled by Emmanuelle Alt?

And thank you to a number of sweet readers that emailed me about the Bakers boots - finally, a knockoff with a decent heel! They're on their way to me now..and the Topshop leather skinnies I ordered are going to be on their way back to London cause they're too @#)$(*& big. That they're so perfectly soft and comfortable only makes the pain worse. Oh well..time to go drink sangria in my leopard print shorts.

Zipped in

Zipper harness, designed by Michelle Yue and made by Norwegian Woods' Angie Johnson, Kain tank, vintage Levi's jeans, Marc by Marc Jacobs boots, vintage blazer.

The second I laid eyes on this zipper harness ingeniously designed by Michelle Yue, I fell in love. Hard. I love that Michelle hatched the idea and enlisted the help of Norwegian Wood designer Angie Johnson to create it - her expertise with zippers seems pretty much unrivaled. I even went so far as to create an account and make my first purchase ever on the fabled Etsy. After a bunch of emailing and anxious waiting, I received a package from her containing the beloved piece, as well as a few other things designed by her and her friends that elicited way too many delighted squeals as I tore back the tissue paper. Thank you to both Michelle and Angie for working together to make this, I couldn't possibly love it more. Though I did the first run here in a plain white tank, it weirdly looks good with most everything. I'm going to stop raving now before it gets out of control.

Oh and my year-long search for the perfect boyfriend jeans has come to an end. Good thing, it was getting pretty hopeless there for a while.

just some shoes

I've gotten a few requests to showcase my shoes..fitting them all into one photo was just not going to happen so here are my current favorites. This rack is one of many, many shoe organizational systems scattered throughout the house.

Clockwise from top left - Promiscuous, Zara, Chloe, Chloe, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Emma Cook for Topshop, Colin Stuart, Bebe, Marni, Aldo, vintage, and Marc by Marc Jacobs.
